The field for the $lO,OOO final of the New Zealand Messenger Series at Alexandra Park next Saturday will almost certainly be restricted to no more than 12 horses, and will not include one of the top four-year-olds, Young Quinn. C. S. Hunter, trainer of Young Quinn, asked officials of the Auckland Trotting Club on the opening night of the meeting on Saturday if the gelding could start, even though he did not contest either of the lead-up heats.
“Reluctantly, we had to decline,” said the president (Mr M. M. N. Corner). “Young Quinn is a fine horse, and the club would have liked him in the field. But the conditions of the race are quite clear. Onlv horses which run in the heats are eligible for selection in the final.”
There Is a very good, chance, though that Young Quinn will be seen in action. He is among the entries for the Patrons’ Free-for-all.
His appearance at the meeting will h'nge on how he travels home from Australia, where he competed in the Inter-Dominion Championships at Perth.
Young Quinn is due to return to Auckland by air on Wednesday-.
