TROTTING Hororata Cup to Noble Charles

Noble Charles qualified to start in the Cheviot Cup when he came with a grand stayer’s run on Saturday to win the Hororata Cup. He will now be one of the favourites for the 3200 m race at Rangiora on March 16.

Noble Charles has fashioned a splendid record in a comparatively brief track career for his Westport ownertrainer, K. J. Powell. He has now had four wins and a third from his last five starts. The prospects of a win for Noble Charles looked anything but bright racing to the straight, where Ripolet

» and Garrison House had j cleared away from the field. Noble Charles was handily ' enough placed, but had great r difficulty clearing the rails. - By the time he was in the . open, the others must have ’ been clear by about 10 r lengths. Noble Charles was 1 inclined to run about a little in the run home, but responded in great style and r ;got up to beat Ripolet by a ’ short length. °l Garrison House finished! lion for third, shading Fuse’ i and Bay Star. The favourite, Kotare Leg- ' end, made up ground for i seventh. He was slow away, and according to his driver, s B. J. Anderson, received a • poor run. Willie Win, the 2/3 favourite, broke at the start and again when squeezed in side the last 800 m. 1 Palestine completed the T.A.B. double when he won the President’s Challenge Stakes, recording a respect- | able 3:29 3-5 for the 2600 m. e I He was soon prominent . after starting from 10m, and , had too much in reserve for ’ Scottish Chat in the run

home, winning by a short length.

Scottish Chat was more than a length in front of Redwood Lass, with Count Laverne a useful fourth, followed by Lycome and Paraville.

DupreeZ provided a highlight of the day when he won the Malvern Handicap. He was hampered early by breaking runners and must have been 70m from the leaders at one stage.

’ Dupreez made up his leeway without too much effort and strode away in the straight to win by two lengths and a half from Rere Hine and Thunder Lark. His win qualified him for intermediate trotters’ events at’ Addington at Easter. Forta Cavalla gained her; fourth win in the last few] months when she beat a useful field of improvers in the Farewell Handicap. She raced in the fourth line for most of the way and took control with about 100 m left. She finished on determinedly for M. Holmes to win by a short length from Maple and Local Dryden, which came fast after being late working clear. Rory, Dauntless, which was wide for almost the whole race, True Fortune, and Tamla Motown were almost in line next.
