TOWN TENNIS TEAM WINS

1 own met County in theid annual representative tennis match at Wilding Park yesterday and won comfortably, but it was still a worth-while encounter.

The mixed doubles were; played first, and Town won all six, but it then lost three, of the six men’s singles, while winning the six, women’s singles, and it; lost only one doubles. Town, therefore, won by 20 matches to 4, perhaps to! make up for the loss Canterbury suffered to Marlborough in the quadrangular tournament which was being played at the same time. The Town-Country match; has not been played for two seasons and those who took part welcomed its rejuvenation. Town won the three top men’s singles but lost the lower three. W. Edgcumbe, top for Town, was too consistent for the young R. Adams, of North Canterbury, who hit strongly, but who could not match Edgecumbe for placement. J. Griffiths, the Country second, excelled by taking S. Menzies, to a tie-break in the second set. In the longest and closestfought contest of the day, the Banks Peninsula veteran, W. Lewthwaite. beat S. Roberts, 4-6,

"6-2, 6-4, and deserved his success by his patience and perseverance. Mrs D. McKinnel was as unrelenting as ever in chasing everv shot against Miss J. Dalzell, of Hurunui, the top woman for . Country. Mrs McKinnel won, 6-2. 6-2. Originally the Town team was to have included the four players of the Nunneley Casket side. But they had to travel to Auckland yesterday instead of to Welling- .; ton on Saturday. The secondstring Town women still won all ; their matches. Results:— Town v. Country i Men’s singles.—W.
