Click West unbeaten in women’s softball
Christchurch West was forced into extra innings by United before it managed to retain its unbeaten record and clinch its senior women’s softball championship win on Saturday. Monowai had an easy win over Burnside while Western Suburbs had the bye. Results:—
Christchurch West 14, United 12.
Monowai 9, Burnside 2. Extra innings
Christchurch West failed to open its account in the first two innings and United gained a good start. A hard drive by A. Caddie and hits by H. Thyne and B. Tilden and errors, allowed the side to score four runs. Although Thyne batted well again in its second innings the side failed to add to its score.
Christchurch West, with hits by A. Keys and J. Phillips, errors and a bunt, scored three runs in its third innings and held United scoreless. It took the lead for the first time in the game when good batting by Keys, S. Constable, L. Watts and R. Storer helped the side score four runs and again United failed to score. Neither side scored in the fifth and Christchurch West had good hits by P. Chamber and Watts adding two runs. S. Pest and B. Clark batted well In reply for United and both scored. S. Constable scored Christchurch West’s only seventh innings run from a wild pitch. United, trailing by four runs entering its last bat, forced Christchurch West into errors and with good hits by M. Hirama and B. Clark scored four r-uns to force the game into extra innings.
Christchurch West lost its first two batters in the eighth innings and then driving batting and a fine hit by S. Cox enabled tiie side to score four runs. United began well with L. Wilson on base and Tilden hitting a home run to clear the bases. The next batter was struck out and then a walk allowed Hirama one base and she advanced on a hit by M. Cormack. Both advanced on a sacrifice: however, the next batter was caught out to end United’s innings. R. Storer (Christchurch West) faced 45 batters, gained seven strike-outs and gave up one walk and 12 hits. Thyne also faced 45 batters and gave up one walk and 16 hits. Easy win Burnside batted first and only two batters, L. Nicolle on an error in the second, and L. Leask on a hit in the fourth, made base in the first five innings. With two batters out in the sixth, C. Clothier made base on an error and scored on a fine hit by C. Norcliffe who also scored. In the seventh innings Burnside was scoreless.
A. Phillips reached first base in Monowai’s first innings, stole to second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a hit by N. Beale, who was advanced on a hit by B. Makinson and scored on an error. B. Turbott
ran the bases well to score in the third innings and she was followed home by S. Stead after another drive by Makinson. V. Morgan hit on in Monowai’s fourth and scored on a hit by ! Turbott. Strong batting by ‘Makinson and E. Seager, and (errors helped Monowai score [three runs in its fifth innings before it was retired with bases loaded. Monowai’s only seventh innings run was scored when Makinson hit a three-base hit and scored on an error. Makinson, for Monowai, faced 27 batters and gained four strike-outs and gave up three hits, while K. Knight faced 35 batters and gave up two walks and 10 hits.
