Gielgud excels at Old Vic
(XI.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON.
Peter Hall’s new production of “The Tempest” for the National Theatre, with Sir John Gielgud as Prospero. scored a double triumph for the director and the star, at the Old Vic. It was Peter Hall’s first production of Shakespeare's i superb swansong, and Sir iJohn Gielgud’s third appearance in the part of Prospero. The symbolic, and prob- ' ably autobiographic, rojmance in which the poet wove a theme of forgiveness 'and spiritual rebirth has been directed with a keen appreciation of its unique blend of fairy tale, profound drama, and comedy. The epilogue, delivered by Gielgud with unforgettable emotional simplicity, [earned Britain’s great Shakespearean actor. now ■almost 70, the first of a (series of tremendous ovations.
Peter Hall’s first production since he succeeded Lord (Laurence) Olivier as director of the National Theatre is one the memory of which Shakespeare lovers I will treasure. ’
