Guardians of Lake Wanaka
Five Guardians of Lake Wanaka have been appointed by the Minister for the Environment (Mr Walding). The role of the guardians would be comparable wLh that of the guardians already appointed for Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau and the Rotorua lakes, Mr Walding said. The guardians are Mr A. S c a i f e , of Wanaka (chairman) a recently retired runholder and chairman of the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute, Lincoln College; Professor T. iW. Walker, professor of I soils, Lincoln College; Dr I. D. Blair, retired reader in agricultural microbiology, Lincoln College; and Messrs: P. D. Gorden, of Wanaka, ; and .W. F. Hunt, of Mau-I ngawera, both farmers. Mr Walding said that the I (Lake Wanaka Preservation! ’Act prohibited, except in emergencies, artificial con-1 trol on the water in the lake; and on natural rate of flow; of lake water down the Clutha River far as the confluence Cardjgna' River. ■ :
The Government would receive the advice of the guardians on the preservation of thfe lake's water levels and shoreline as far as possible within their natural state and the maintenance and, if possible, the improvement of the quality of the lake’s water. .
