Athlete of year

(NZ. Press Association! NEW PLYMOUTH. The Commonwealth Games 10,000 m champion, R. J. Tayler, has won the Bass “athlete of the year” award. He received it al Hamilton yesterday after the first day of the national junior athletics championships. Ihe award had seemed a close thing between J. Walker (Auckland) and Tayler. But Tayler won a majority of the votes cast by the Athletic Writers’ Association members. Tayleris achievements were not just one gold medal, but represented a

massive contribution to New Zealand athletics over 10 years, since he set a world mile record for a 15-year-old with his still unbroken 4min 18sec.

Also, he has run a sub-four-minute mile and a world ranking 2hr 16min marathon.

T. J. L. Quax, the first winner of the award, in 1972, was there to see Tayler receive the 1974 trophy. “It is good to see Dick win,” he said. “For years people used to ask who is this fellow Dick Tayler. Now they know.”

The winner of the award in 1973 was R. P. Dixon.
