Heaphy Track safe for while
Although the Government has approved it in principle, work on the “Heaphy Track” road appears to be many years away yet. The South Island Local Bodies Association, which has sought an immediate start on the controversial link, yesterday received a letter from the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) outlining the reasons for a delay, if indeed it was decided to proceed with the project. “After endorsing, in principle, the coastal route between Big River and Paturau, the Government came to the conclusion that it would not be possible to make an early start,” Mr Watt said.
This was because of the “urgent need” to improve existing roads and bridges in Nelson and Buller. DEPUTATION PLAN “This is just going backwards,” said Mr J. B. Collett, the Mayor of Lyttelton. “It looks as if everything is going to be shelved.”
“It looks more like the effect some vociferous action groups can have on the Government,” said Mr C. W. Kearns (Motueka), The association council, which was meeting in Christchurch, decided that a deputation would go to Mr Watt to take up the issue.
