Trains delayed
A derailed waggon delayed trains between Picton and Christchurch for five hours early yesterday morning. The railway track was damaged when a loaded waggon jumped the rails about midnight between Kowhai and Goose Bay. near Kaikoura The damage was not repaired until 5.30 am.

To give pupils the basic skills of literacy and to train them to think and to evaluate are essentials of education. I believe, however, that the great challenge to educationalists is to int.il the desire to learn, to think and to re-evaluate. If this is truly imparted it will last throughout life. However, it is sad that many teachers have not had their own appetites for continual thinking stimulated. But then thinking, like work, is not popular throughout our society today. Perhaps this helps to explain why real teaching is an up-hill job. There are some though who are still concerned for the standards which, admittedly, are eroding fast.—Yours, > etc D. B.
