500 attend Lions’ convention

The evolution of the Maori people and their place in present - day New Zealand was the subject of an address by Lieutenant-Colonel C. M. Bennett, of Rotorua, who was guest speaker at the fourth convention of the Lions Club District 202 E (the South Island north of the Waitaki River) held at Kaikoura recently.

More than 250 Lions and their wives attended. It was the largest convention held in Kaikoura.

! Welcoming addresses were given by the president of the Kaikoura Lions Club (Mr S. W. Pilbrow) and the Kaikoura County chairman (Mr V. J. Corbett). A message from the world president of Lions was delivered by an international director, Mr P. Fernandez, from Hawaii.

The next day was devoted to the business part of the convention. The convention ended with a dedication church service on the final day.

Dr E. I. S. Kincaid, New Brighton, was appointed district governor-elect, to take office in June. The Seddon club won the Winton Trophy for its programme of club activities during the year. Ashburton will be the host for the 1975 convention.
