Kotare Legend likely in Hororata Cup
By
G. K. Yule
Kotare Legend, the lone three-year-old in the field, should prove more than a match for his older rivals in the Hororata Cup tomorrow.
The Fallacy colt has always appealed as a stayer of tremendous potential, and this will be his big chance to confirm the high opinion formed of him. He has compiled a splendid record this season for Mr and Mrs A. R. Abell, of Fernside, and at his latest start beat all but the speedy Captain Harcourt in the Great Northern Derby Stakes on February 16. The pace was on throughout that race, and Kotare Legend’s
placing suggested that he will be capable of a strong 3200 m on the Hororata track.
Westport pacers have fashioned a splended record on the West Coast, Nelson, and Blenheim circuits since Christmas. Apart from the Nelson meeting in June, trotting has virtually ended for the season in those dis-
tricts. As a result, the Coast horses will have to travel to Canterbury to secure racing. NOBLE CHARLES Noble Charles should do the Westport district pround in this race tomorrow. The six-year-old, comparatively lightly raced, has shown ability above average. Two starts ago. he humbled a useful field in the main race at Nelson on February 2, returning 4:20 3-5 for the 3200 m on the searching Richmond course. A week later, when handicapped on 40m, he finished boldly from the rear for third to McCreedy in the Marlborough Cup. Great interest will centre in the showing of the 1972 New Zealand Derby Stakes winner, Willie Win. He took i a heavy’ spill in a race accident at Addington Raceway in November, when having his only start for this season. He has been back in steady work for some weeks and it is unlikely his ownertrainer, R. H. Negus, will [produce him unless he is [near his best. With a reasonable start, he should get [into the finish. SECOND LEG
A number of other smart pacers wi’’ contest the $2500 race and bold showings are expected from High Chaparral, Dclvin Scott. Thurber Command, Royal Charm, and Star Guest. Betting will be well spread in the second leg, the President's Challenge Stakes, for three and four-year-olds Palestine. Delbrae. and Gay Stephanie form a likely trio, but they can expect spirited opposition from Late Again. Red Skin, I.ycome. Paraville. Wichita and Strauss
