Wool sale by sample
Following joint discussions within the wool selling industry, a programme for introducing auction sales of wool by sample and associated test certificate has been agreed upon, the New Zealand Wool Marketing Corporation announced this week.
The New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association has agreed to accept certain categories of wool offered for sale in this fashion. Member companies of the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association are providing the grab sampling and coring equipment, and will meet the costs of drawing samples and cores up to the stage where samples are sent, to the laboratory for testing. The New Zealand Wool
Marketing Corporation will meet the cost of testing the samples in the initial period so as to remove an obstacle to the introduction of improved auction selling techniques. It is envisaged that a proportion of this cost will be recovered by sale of the test certificates to the purchasers. The corporation will also be prepared to safeguard growers’ interests at the time of sale. Sale by sample, which
will begin in Wellington (March-April-May sales) and Auckland (May-June sales) is part of an industry move which will be progressively developed throughout New Zealand.,
The introduction of this method of selling, together with the associated benefit of building larger sale lots, will improve the flow of wool on to the Suction sale floor and could, aid in achieving cost savings within the industry.
