Missing balloonist

The United States Department of Defence is giving up its search by aircraft of the South Atlantic for the missing American balloonist, Colonel Thomas Gatch, who set 'out on February 17 to become the first balloonist to cross the Atlantic and was last sighted on February 21 by a Liberian freighter about 900 miles south of the Azores. United States Navy aircraft have been sent out six times to search an area of about 223,000 square miles, including an area east of the Canary Islands.—Washington, March 17.
