Games will show profit
"The Press” Special Service KAITAIA, March 6. I'he British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch were certain to show a record profit, although it would be
about three months before the final accounts were available, said the chairman of the Organising Committee (Mr R. S. Scott) when he spoke to Kaitaia Jaycees this evening.
He said that the net ticket revenue was about SI 10,000 above the budget. Paid attendances were 324,000 people, and the revenue from this source was $1,313,000. Another 41,500 did not pay, and 60.000 paid $23,000 to attend training sessions, so that total admissions were §425.000, and the total gate, §1.336.000. This compares with Edin-: burgh. 1970. when paid attendance was 225.000 and the gate was §440,000. Mr Scott said that some of the profits would probably go to the New Zealand Olvmpic and Commonwealth Games Association to finance New Zealand teams to attend;
[ other Commonwealth Games I and a further contribution ■ might be made to the Christchurch City Council. 5 ■ Consideration would also II be given to refunding the §4O 3 jwhich the technical officials ' paid for their uniforms. i The Games were a success in all ways, except that -jthere were only 4000 over-: ' seas visitors. This was well J'below the number expected.' ! They were the first Games) ■ planned for the television, viewer and Mr Scott said he ■'began consultation with the. N.Z.B.C. two years before the ■ Games. Mr Scott said that he was pleased to be able to release ■ these figures at a Jaycees gathering because of’ the great help given by the organisation and planning i for the Games.
