Davies wins pro-am
(NZ. Press Association! NELSON. An unattached Auckland professional, W. Davies, won his first professional tournament of any significance when he took the SIOOO Nelson pro-am golf tournament yesterday. He shot a two-under-par 69 to finish one shot ahead of the pre-tournament favourites, C. Owen and A. Palmer.
Davies was two under par after five holes, and four under after 12 holes, but dropped two shots on the homeward nine. A Christchurch professional, W. Logan, looked to have a good chance when he was two under after 12. but a tour of Nelson bunkers led to a 72.
The top amateur was J. Fellowes with a par 71.
Boxing.— Clyde Gray (Canada) retained the Commonwealth welter-weight boxing title with a ninth-round technical knock- : out against Bunny Grant [ i Jamaica) in Toronto. Gray suffered injured stomach muscles early in the fight. Police bowls.— The national police bowling tournament will be held in Wellington tomorrow and Friday. More than 70 players in teams from almost all police districts will compete.
