An apple by its colour
What sort of apples should New Zealand be exporting to the United Kingdom and Europe? When executives of the Apple and Pear Board asked this question of 50 British and European wholesalers and
retailers today, the reply was mixed. A Scottish wholesaler plumped for Granny Smith, Red Delicious, and Gala. Others said that buyers seemed to be demanding
green apples at present, but predicted that soon the red apple would have its day.
“The trouble is that people seem to choose apples with their eyes rather than their tastebuds,” commented the chairman of the board (Mr S. D. Sinclair). A British retailer asked whether Gala apples would become a main export brand.
In reply, the general manager of the board (Mr J. B. Cubey), said that this variety had made progress, particularly in Hawke’s Bay, but the quantity available was still small. There were several inquiries for Braebum apples, a small quantity of which had been sent over last year. The reply was that 4000 cartons would be shipped this year, but that there were some problems.
