Curfew in Allahabad
riV.Z.P A. -Reuter—Copyright i NEW DELHI, February 18. A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on the northern Indian city of Allahabad after armed clashes between supporters of two political parties in which several people were injured, including a policeman hit by sniper bullets.
The clashes occurred after provocative speeches by supporters of two candidates contesting the crucial Legislative Assembly elections next week in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state and the home of the Prime Minister (Mrs Gandhi). The polling is regarded as a test of the popularity of the Indian leader in the midst of the serious economic crisis facing the country.
The Minister of Finance ; (Mr Yeshwantrao Chavan) was forced to abandon a ■ political speech in Firozabad, another Uttar Pradesh town, yesterday, by students who nelted stones at him. shouting: “We want jobs, not .speeches,”
