SHOOTING CHARGES Suppression refused
An application by counsel, for suppression of the name of a man charged with manslaughter and assault with intent to rob was refused by Mr W. F. Brown. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The man. James David Wilson, aged 21, a lubrication attendant (Mr P. H. B. Hall), was remanded in custody to March 4. No plea was entered.
Wilson is charged with the manslaughter by an unlawful act of Wayne Hart-McEwen, aged 22, a carpenter, on Sunday; and with assaulting with intent to rob. while armed with a shotgun, John Bernard Hall, aged 28, a taxidriver, on the same day.
In seeking interim suppression of Wilson’s name, Mr Hall said there was some evidence that there might tie a medical background Wilson’s wife was pregnant. “The press has been somewhat adverse towards this defendant,” Mr Hall said. “This sort of headline is sensationalist. and there is a good deal of speculation about the facts,” he said, holding up for the Magistrate to see the front page of “The Press" of yesterday.
"I am not prepared to suppress his name,” the Magistrate said.
