$70,000 FOR DOBELL
A painting by Sir William Dobell was sold for $70,000 at auction in Sydney last week.
A Sydney car dealer, Mr Ron Hodgson, bought “Wangi Boy,” a predominantly bluetoned oil panting of a youth sitting on a seashore beside a small sailing dinghy. Seventeen of Dobell’s works sold for a total of $325,720 dollars. The Dobells, from the collection of a Sydney confectionery businessman, Mr Darrel Lea, were the main interest of the auction of 131 works by Australian artists, including Sir Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Sali Herman, Charles Blackman, Donald Friend, and lan Fairwether.
The auctioneer, Mr Geoff Gray, told the audience of 3000 in the grand ballroom at the Sydney Chevron hotel that “Wangi Boy” had been found in a back room of Sir William Dobell’s home during an inventory, and it was apparent the artist considered it not one of his better works.
Sir Russell Drysdale’s “Broken Mountain” went for $45,500, believed to be the highest price paid for a Drysdale.
