On - course double won by Southland stables
Southland stables wont the on-course double at| Addington on Saturday; evening when Canny; Glen and Coral Donna, won the Twilight and Marine Handicaps res-, pectively.
Canny Glen, which is trained: by H. W. Skinner at Hedgehope, I took the lead with about 1700 m to run and although challenges were coming fast at the finish he held on by half a neck from Star Guest, with about a length to Pippo.
Canny Glen had been successful a week earlier over 3200 m at Forbury Park and his win price of $14.05 was a false result for supporters of an in-form stable.
Like Canny Glen, Coral Donnaj made most of the pace and won, by almost two lengths from Pales-; tine, which was followed at nose intervals by Imperial Demand, Coulisht. Cnringa John, Paganini.; and Red Plaid. Coral Donna, which is trained by her part-owner. R. O. Baynes, at Edendale. was driven by C.i I Baynes. SECOND WIN ■ Don Lopez gained his second; i win from four starts when he ■
beat Eau Sausage, S'aucy Jack, and Commissioner in the New Brighton Two-.vear-old Stakes. ; Don Lopez skipped at the start' but gained a lucky run through' the field and was handily placed on the rails after aboul 4001 metres. J. A. Carmichael moved' the Lopez Hanover colt off the; fence on the turn, and lie raced' past the leader, Commissioner,! inside Hie 200 metres for an easy; win. Eau Sauvage, which had a; perfect run on the outer, finished; on well for second ahead of Saucy Jack. Commissioner, although weakening. was far from disgraced. He covered a considerable amount of extra ground in the middle stages, aftei- breaking at the start, to reach the lead. The likely clash of most of the youngsters placed on Saturday evening with Noodlum and Astro Blue off level marks in the Timaru Nursery Stal es next Saturday should be a highlight; of the meeting. GOOD GUIDE Winning form from the final I night of the Forbury Park meet-1 ing on February 9 proved a good: guide when Sue, and later CannyGlen, won. Sue. which has been most cou- ' sistent this season, was handy I
throughout the Waimairl Handii cap and won by almost a length ; from the warm favourite, iDupreez. which after breaking 'early was responsible for a fine 'run. He should not be long winining again. I Now Charles, after being near! ; the rear with Dupreez on the, -home turn, finished on well, a| 'head clear of the weakening , pacemaker, Indira. Zerox gave his five rivals little, 'chance in the Autumn Handicap! when he led throughout for ai win by seven lengths from the; favourite. Cee Ar, and All Alone.) Zerox opened up a big gap early; and apart from Cee Ar’s progress from fourth at the 800 m; to second, the race was little more than a procession. OVERDUE WIN Thurber Command gained an overdue win in the Au Revoirj Handicap when he held off the ; (outsider, False Lady, by a nose.; ; False Lady joined Thurber Com-’ ’ rnand near the 400 m and headed ‘ him in the run home. However, 1 Thurber Command came again, ; under a hard drive from R. M,; i Cameron. ' Get Time, after trailing, -finished on close up for third,' ,a neck ahead of Delvin Scott; i and the disappointing favourite. '■ I Gliding Light.
