Upset in Air N.Z. contest

By P F.

Cashmere Wanderers, a second division team, caused the only upset of the first matches in the new, SI2,(XM) Air New Zealand Cup competition " hen the soccer season began in Christchurch on Saturday. They beat the Southern League first division team. Shamrock. 3-2, after being 0-2 down at half time.

Cashmere is coached byMr E. Bennett, the former Bumdale coach and former Christchurch City and Canterbury inside-forward. Shamrock, led by its new coach and captain, S. Wooliscroft. a young Englishman, was without six of its firstteam players for various reasons, and gave away chances in the second half after a good first spell. The two National League dubs Christchurch United and New Brighton both had convincing victories in their respective sections of the Christchurch section of this national tournament. Brighton scored 14 goals without reply from Nomads United, which was allowed into Section B to do away with the bye and make an even number of teams, and United had a 5-1 win against Western, of the Southern League. Other winners in the round-robin series in Section A were Technical and Burndale. and Rangers won in Section B The only misfortune of the day was in the RangersWoolston clash, when Woolston's 19-year-old left linkman, Brvan Smith, broke his right leg going into a hard tackle. Play was held up for seven minutes, and Smith was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital, where he was admitted. Although it had virtually nd opposition. New Brighton showed signs, under its new player-coach. A. Vest, of being a much stronger proposition than last season. In spite of being without four of its probable firstteam players, Brighton created chances tidily, with N. Francis prominent, and many of the goals were well taken. K. Mulgrew scored HAT-TRICK It took the National League champion. United, a while to settle, but with four goals in a 15-minute
