Aust. Davis Cup squad
(A.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) MELBOURNE.
Tennis selectors have picked Australia’s biggest Davis Cup squad in an effort to retain the trophy it won from America last year. The selectors picked 12 players, including R. Laver, J. Newcombe, K. Rosewall and A. Roche, and appointed N. Fraser to his fourth term as team captain.
A large squad was chosen because players are committed in various world tournaments. Financial negotiations with the top players will depend on their availability while lesser players would have contracts which oblige them to compete in the Australian circuit. I Officials said it was un-
likely that more than four players would be brought together for any Davis Cup tournament.
Roche is back in competitive tennis after a long layoff because of an injured elbow which threatened to end his career. He returned to championship play only after a Filipino faith healer was reputed to have operated on his elbow and rei moved two blood clots. A promising junior player, Chris Kachel, will be added to the squad during the eastern zone championships for experience.
The squad members are: Fraser (captain), M. Anderson, S. Ball, R. Case, P. Dent, C. Dibley, R. Giltinan, J. Masters, Laver, Newcombe, Rosewall, and Roche.
