Barbie visits Paraguay

The former Nazi Gestapo officer, Klaus Barbie, stayed in two luxury hotels m the (Paraguayan capital this week, the Ministry of the Interior in Asuncion has disclosed. Barbie, who now calls himself Altmann, has been resident in neighbouring Bolivia since the early 19505. i France has repeatedly asked ■the Bolivian Government for •his extradition, to face the (death sentence passed by a (military tribunal after the Second World War, but so far the request has not been granted.
The Paraguayan Ministry said that Barbie stayed in the Central Guarani Hotel under the name of Kiaus Altmann Barbie on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and ‘hat before that he had been staying in the Hotel del Paraguay, a historic and comfortable old building not far from the city centre.
He moved around freely tn Asuncion, and returned to Bolivia on Thursday. Unofficial reports say that Barbie was negotiating permanent residence in Paraguay.
