Local crews withdraw

Christchurch rowing crews have lost valuable competition because of difficulties in travelling to the two-day Otago regatta at Lake Waihola, Dunedin, this week-end. With the national championships in 10 days, the Union, Canterbury and Avon, of Christchurch, needed the extra competition to help their preparations for the national regatta. But the clubs were forced to withdraw because of the fuel situation and other problems involving transport. Although the top Avon crews are in the North Island, the club was intending to send some lower graded crews.

The withdrawals are a disappointment for the Christchurch clubs because the local association had talks with the Otago body earlier this season to organise more competition amongst South Island clubs.
