N.Z. LINE RATES
(N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. The New Zealand Shipping Line had won agreement from the United Kingdom - New Zealand Shipping Conference to work between the United Kingdom and New Zealand at Conference freight rates, the line’s general manager (Mr C. H. Speight) said tonight in response to an inquiry by the Press Association.
Mr Speight said the Conference Lines worked in more lanes than the U.K.-N.Z. trade, and the New Zealand Line had applied to join the Conference to serve only between the United Kingdom and New Zealand. This had been agreed to. Mr Speight said it would have been impractical for the New Zealand Line to enter the trade at freight rates lower than those charged by the Conference Lines.
“We have only two vessels, and they would quickly make us inoperable by putting vessels alongside us. We would end up with a deficit at the end of the first year and quickly lose the confidence of importers and exporters,” he said.
