WELLINGTON. The chairman of the New Zealand Football Association and one of the country's most famous test cricketers, Mr J. A. Cowie, does not believe that soccer is encroaching seriously into the summer season. Commenting on complaints from the Wellington Cricket Association and Wellington Softbail Association. Mr Cowie said he did not think the problem was as serious as thev had claimed.
“It is over to the individual what he plays.” -Mr Cowie said. "But most pre-season soccer tournaments are played on Sundays so a chap can still play his cricket or his softball on a Saturday if he wants.
“I would doubt, too. whether winter sports training during the week would have much disruption on cricket. In my experience, from February on hardly anyone ever goes to cricket practice.”
Mr Cowie said that if it were taking place, he would not condone soccer clubs coercing players to play soccer ahead of cricket in the summer
“It is something that can easily be settled if there is a bit of give and take on both sides.”
Mr Cowie said that officially the soccer season went from March 1 to October 31, but because of lack of grounds it was usually limited to the first week of April and the last in August.
