S.I. container service study
CV.Z. Press Association > AUCKLAND, February 14. The N.Z. Shipping Corporation was examining the economics of a direct container service between New Zealand and Britain, the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) said tonight at the naming ceremony of the New Zealand ship Waitangi. The service would be aimed at providing South Island importers and ex-
porters with the same opportunities as those in the North Island, but it would also include Auckland and Wellington calls,
and reduce the transit time of container cargoes from 40 to 25 days. The service at present provided by Associated Container Transportation and the Australian National Line includes Australian calls, where the container ships load the bulk of their north-bound cargoes. The A.C.T. ships call only at Auckland and Wellington. Mr Kirk said such a container service would be in line with the Government’s regional development programme.
