Computer analysis in shipbuilding
Lloyd's Register and shipbuilding firms have always had close liaison. But now has come further progress in joint cooperation, and a number of shipyards In Britain and Europe are collaborating with the society in the application of structural analysis techniques by computer. One shipyard which has recently taken advantage o£ this arrangement is Sunderland Shipbuilder.-. Ltd. After making some preliminary design calculations, Sunderland Shipbuilders’ staff analysed stress and buckling criteria, using Nastran. Under this arrangement, builders of large tankers to Lloyd’s Register class are offered the use of the Hull Structures Department’s structural analysis: facilities.
A Lloyd’s Register surveyor ' has been assigned to a full-time liaison role with shipbuilders using this facility. The scheme was devised to enable shipbuilders to standardise their : direct methods of calculation of certain scantlings required by the society’ for the plan ap-: proval of large tankers. Naturally, this co-operation . simplifies the approval process. . formed by means of the society’s , own techniques, and do not require step-by-step rechecking. : Furthermore, it allows the , society’s plan approval surveyors ’ to discuss problems and make recommendations when building . is in progress, saving time and . expense in later fabrication ' work. The shipbuilder, using i such computer-based techniques of structural analysis, is also de- . I veloping his own expertise in (order to set up his own | analysis facility. i This not only puts the ship- | builder in a position to make his own direct calculations for t; classification purposes, but also . j lets him use techniquest for j comparative design studies as a "i means of obtaining optimum deB signs—a vital asset in present>jday shipbuilding which is beset ’•'with swift change and increased individual ship tonnage. Ships O now building, for today and to8 morrow, have totally different 5 stresses and problems to face y than those of yesterday. 9 « * sj( ARRIVALS Saturday j Rangatira, (6.34 a.m.), 9387, 0 Capt.
