INTER-DOMINION SERIES Young Quinn should do well in first heat

(New Zealand Press Association) PERTH. Steady backing for the New Zealand four-year-old Young Quinn has been a feature of pre-post betting on the tinal of the Inter-Dominion Pacing Championship series, which start here tonight.

The Young Charles gelding ihas firmed from 16/1 to 14/1 land in some quarters to 12/1. Until Young Quinn arived here, Perth punters were unaware that the strong-plain-looking bay had run third behind the brilliant Arapaho in the New Zealand Cup, second to the same horse in the Auckland Cup and second to free-legged champion Robalan in the Wellington Cup. When his record was publicised, a steady trickle of Perth money went on the gelding, which is quoted at 6/1 — fourth favourite — for the first heat tonight. Favourite for the heat (at 7/2) is the Victorian pacer, Bret Armagh. The best-backed horse overnight for the final was the showy New South Wales pacer, Paleface Adios, which is now outright favourite at 5/1. On the second line are Just Too Good (N.S.W.) and Royal Gaze (Vic.), both at 7/1.

Hondo Grattan is at eights, but this price will tumble if he wins his heat tonight. Young Quinn’s trainerreinsman, C. Hunter, is pleased with the condition of the gelding, which is eating well at the Herne Hill stables where he is quartered.

Perth has been experiencing weather in the mid-30s, but the heat has not affected Young Quinn. But New Zealand’s "iron horse,” Hi Foyle, has become dehydrated and was forced to miss a vitpl workout yesterday in preparation for the third heat tonight. But his trainer, P. Gallagher, is confident the pacer will put up a good performance in his heat in which he is matched against two Inter-Dominion winners, Hondo Grattan and Welcome Advice. “We were warned about the excessive (icat in Perth at this time of the year and were surprised to find conditions so pleasant when we got here,” Gallagher said. “But Hi Foyle didn’t come through it so well and gave me cause for concern for some time. “I considered it unwise to give him solid work yesterday and he will go into the race on a preparation of solid jogging. But he’s a wee tough horse and I know he will get better as the title races progress,” Gallagher said. Hondo Grattan, Bold Jason, Waitawhile Boy, the Victorian pacer Royal Gaze and Young Quinn were given workouts at Gloucester Park yesterday and all showed they will go into the championships completely fit. Other top contenders from New South Wales, including Paleface Adios, Just Too Good, and Adios Victor were restricted to trials on various tracks scattered around Perth. Selections for tonight’s heats are—Heat one: Bret Armagh, Adios Victor, Park Royale.
