A tropical cyclone in the central Tasman Sea is moving towards the southern part of the South Island and a warm northerly airstream flows over New Zealand.

KAIKOURA COAST. CANTERBURY— North-west winds strong in some inland places; rain in the Alps, heavy at times, and scattered light rain in South Canterbury; elsewhere fine and hot. CENTRAL MARLBOROUGH AND THE SOUNDS.—North-west winds strong in exposed places and possibly reaching gale force tonight; fine and hot in central Marlborough; warm and some cloudy periods about the Sounds. NELSON, BULLER, NORTH WESTLAND.—Northerly winds becoming fresh in exposed places; cloudy and warm; rain developing. SOUTH WESTLAND.—Moderate winds, mainly between north and east; periods of rain, heavy at times; mild. OUTLOOK.—Showers in Buller and Westland, elsewhere mainly fair.
