Quiet, mixed trading on Australian markets
, Australian markets closed on a narrowly mixed note in quiet trading yesterday, but with a generally firmer undertone evident towards the end of the session. i Most base metal stocks I made steady progress. Bou'gainville was lifted 4c to 215 c las the market reacted favour(ably to its amplification of iits profit figures. M.1.M.. C.R.A. and B H. South moved firmly upwards, while Emperor gained 5c at 210 c. Peko-Wallsend. WestJem Mining and G.M.K. were among the stocks to drift lower. Weeks rose 4c to 108 c and Woodside-Burmah rose 2c to 172 c but Ampol showed .easier. B H P. emerged out of the (previous sessions to record a 14c gain at 794 c. and the B.N.S.W. recorded a Gc rise at 820 c. , Amatil and T.N.T. made marginal improvements along with Myers and E.Z. Industries. Philip Morris, however, continued its headlong slide (with a further 20c drop to 1 1720 c. The stock has lost J around 60c in the past few days. I C.U.B. was another weak ’spot, with a 7c loss at 265 c; J and C.S.R. fell 2c at 408 c.,
