TROTTING M. Holmes trying to regain lead on list

M. I lolmes will have a strong following this evening on the second night of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s festival meeting as he attempts to draw level with P. Wolfenden al the head of the list of successful drivers for the season.

Holmes advanced his total of winning drives for the season to 37, one fewer than Wolfenden, when he won with Hillcrest and Al’s Holiday atl Alexandra Park last Saturday. His drives this evening willl include three members of J. S. Dalgety’s team — Living Doll, Red Skin, and Adios Ned — and Lady Martial. Holmes was not certain yesterday whether he would drive Lightsey in the Dunedin Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double, or whether he would again be behind Jillinda in the Oamaru Handicap. Tremendous interest will centre on the performance of the highly regarded Southland three-year-old, Lunar Chance, when he contests the Fairfield Pace. He provided a highlight of the first night of the meeting last week when he finished third, a nose and half a length behind Gentle Miss and Cap-; tain Jura in the Opoho pace. 1 After beginning well, Lunar ■ Chance was allowed to drift to the tail of the small field. ! He did not appear to be at j ease on the bends, and it was; not until almost at the; straight entrance that he wasi pulled out to improve. He made no impression until 70m out when his chances of getting near the the leaders looked remote. However, he put on a spirited sprint, which deserved a better fate. After the race, his Gore owner-trainer, K. Lawlor, said he felt that Lunar Chance needed experience. He was considering taking the gelding to Hutt Park later this month. He was also considering racing him at Addington Raceway at Easter, but his main mission i would be a $3OOO race on I his home course in April. Lunar Chance will meet | this evening a much stronger j field than last week, but if his driver can take full advantage of his great ability, he should go close to winning. However, he might find it hard to contend with Scottish Joy, Gentle Miss, Cap-; tain Jura, Thurber Command, j Canny Glen, and Pippo. ; Acceptances:— 4.5 p.m.— KEW PACE, S 1300; Cl; mobile j< start: 2700m.—Kavson (1).
