(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright/ HONG KONG, January 31. An American and a first batch of five South Vietnamese captured during recent fighting in the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea were freed today by China and crossed into Hong Kong, a Government official said. They crossed the Lowu bridge at Shum Chun on the Hong Kong-China border, the official said. The American is Gerald Kosh, aged 27, who had been working as regional liaison officer for the United States Defence Attache’s Office and was captured on Pattie Island. He had been landed on the island by a South Vietnamese patrol boat before the fighting between Chinese and South Vietnamese gunboats on January 19 and 20. A Chinese announcement on Tuesday said that 48 South Vietnamese officers and men had been captured and would be released in batches.
