U .K. badgers protected

The badger sporran — the pouch worn in front of a kilt — used by officers and N.C.O.’ of the Argyll and Sutherland Highland regiment, is to disappear. The number of badgers in Britain has been dwindling for many >ears and in a bid to save them from extinction a protection act has been passed by the Government. In view of this the Ministry of Defence has asked the regiment to find an alternative to the badgerhead sporran. The ban will also end the luxury trade in badger-hair shaving brushes. Badgers, timid nocturnal animals, sometimes described as Britain’s only bear, have inhabited the country for centuries and bones estimated to be 60,000 years old have been found in caves in southern England.
