Marathon impostor stopped
The Commonwealth Games had a marathon impostor tonight when a young man clad in black running singlet and shorts raced on to the track and headed for the finish. He was aiming for 11th place.
The man was intercepted by officials and was taken away with a blanket over his head to be interviewed by the police. Inspector C. Graham, in charge of the police at Queen Elizabeth II Park, said that the young man went willingly to the Central Police Station, where he was later released without being charged. The man apparently joined the race near the gates to the park, said Inspector Graham. He would not give the impostor’s name. The impostor had run on to the track just after a genuine black-vested runner, John Robinson, of New Zealand, entered the stadium in tenth place. As the full entry of three New Zealanders had already finished, and as the impostor was wearing no number, athletics officials realised he he was a fake and two of them rushed on to the track to intercept him.
