Course for referees

The international soccer federation, F.1.F.A., plans to have a common code of refereeing during the World Cup finals in West Germany this summer in an attempt to make them the most troublefree in the history of the championships. In previous finals there have been incidents. Lack of consistent interpretation of the rules and a lack of authority and discipline on the field have been the causes of scenes.
As a first step towards solving these problems, the F.I.F.A. specialist is drawing up a panel of the best and strongest referees in the world for the finals.
The names of the 30 referees the F.I.F.A. selects for the 38 matches will be announced in London on February 8. At the beginning of June, more than a week before the finals begin, the 30 will gather in Frankfurt for a course.
“At the end of it, the referees will be in no doubt how F.I.F.A. wants the finals run,” says an official of the West German World Cup organising committee.
