Manhunt in U.S.
(N.Z Presf Assn—Copyright > SAN FRANCISCO. Jan 30. Police have mounted the biggest manhunt in San Francisco’s history for a team of black gunmen who cruised the city and shot to death four white people apparently chosen at random. Under the code name “Operation Zebra." officers spread out throughout the city in the search for the killers —police thought there were at least two of them—who killed the four on Monday night within a two-hour span and also wounded a fifth person.
Uniformed officers were placed in civilian clothes to patrol the streets in unmarked cars. The entire Homicide Bureau was kept on duty. A special operations centre was set up to direct the search.
The murders brought to 10 the number of similar street killings in three months. "This is the most serious series of crime in this city’s history.” said Chief Inspector Charles Barca. “I’ve never heard of such senseless, unprovoked and vicious killings.”
