WHITLAM ABROAD
Malaysian request (N.Z.P.A-Reuter—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 30. The visiting Australian Prime Minister (Mr Whitlam) has promised a sympathetic review of a Malaysian request for assured supplies of wheat, sugar, and steel for a five-year period. Mr Whitlam was given Malaysia’s requirements yesterday during his first and only official round of talks with the Malaysian Prime Minister (Tun Abdul Razak). The Malaysians want a guaranteed supply of at least 350,000 long tonnes of wheat a year, with provisions for an increase of between 7 and 8 per cent each year over a five-year period. They also want assured supplies of 300,000 tons of raw sugar, and an unspecified quantity of steel for the next five years. One definite promise Mr Whitlam did make was that Australia would maintain two Mirage squadrons at Butterworth, in northern Malaysia, “as long they remain relevant to the needs of both countries, and to the realities of the region.” Mr Whitlam arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Monday for a four-day visit on the first leg of a tour of six SouthEast Asian countries.
