Luck ran out for Show Gate

Shaw Gat., the "first lady" of South Island racing, has courage to match her dess. This was never more evident than at Trentham last Saturday when she virtually dragged a

hind leg after being galloped on near the home turn in the George Adams Handicap. She escaped with a superficial wound in the incident although nerves in her leg were affected temporarily—long enough to cost her what her jockey. R. B. Marsh, believed would have been a winning chance.

, Show Gate is now at Riccarton for the Benson and Hedges Inter-Island on Friday. Mr G. B. Thomson will take her back to Mosgiel at the weekend and will rest her for 10 days before preparing her for weighi-for-age races at Trentham in March. After that will be the big adventure, a trip to Sydney for the $lOO,OOO Doncaster Handicap and other rich races at the A.J.C. Sydney Cup carnival at Easter. Show Gate was trotted in the centre of the course for about 20 minutes at Riccarton yesterday morning. Mister Pompous, the star three-year-old at Trentham, and a top fancy for the Benson and Hedges Inter-Island, will be freshened after Friday’s race and is unlikely to race again before he embarks on his autumn campaign in Sydney. The Auckland jockey, D, A. Peake, who ably partnered Mister Pompous in winning the Wellington Stakes and Wellington Derby at Trentham. has been approached to ride the colt in Sydney. Peake is expected to decide by the end of the week whether he will make the trip.

Mister Pompous’s stablemates, Audaclter and Red Peak, were nominated vesterday for the $lOO,OOO A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap at Easter. They won over $30,000 for the Lee stable when campaigned in Melbourne last spring. Jealous Lover, a tw’o-year-old from Wanganui with a good record at Riccarton, returned south at the week-end and did striding work on the plough yesterday. He appeared to thrive on his Trentham racing, and will throwdown a strong challenge to the South Islanders In the Canterbury Challenge Stakes on Friday. W. D. Skelton will ride Jealous Lover, whose three starts at the New Zealand Cup meeting produced two wins, both in handicaps. and a fourth in the Welcome Stakes. In his first of two starts at the Wellington Cup meeting. Jealous Lover carried top weight of 58.5 into second a head from Copper Belt (52,5) in the Nursery Handicap.

Rich event.—A new race to be run in the autumn by the Avondale Jockey Club will be the richest in New Zealand for two-year-old fillies. The event will carry a stake of $9OOO. 1-IP.A.)
