Ships set record
The combined tonnage of vessels berthed at the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s wharves yesterday was a record for the port. The figure was 142.672 tons, and did not include the tonnage of two vessels anchored in thej stream. included in the total were the naval vessels at present alongside the wharves. Merchant vessels are classified by gross tonnage and' naval vessels by displace-\ ment tonnage — a different j measurement altogether — but the combined figure is nevertheless a record one for ships at Cashin Quay and inner harbour berths The record tonnage tor vessels within the port limits (hut not necessarily at the wharves) is 158.799 tons on May 14. 1961. On that day six .-hips were in the stream and another four at anchor off the heads.
