Yachtsmen will be busy
While most sportsmen will be directing their attention towards the climax of the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, Canterbury yachtsmen will be beginning a week of intensive competition. The open handicap events for the McMaster Cup (monotype centreboards) and Beryl Stacey Trophy (all other classes) and the J.C. and R class championship race for the Irene Stacey Trophy have been allocated to Lyttelton on Saturday. The harbour will also be the venue for the first two heats of the Canterbury Javelin series. The other four races will be sailed the following week-end. The six events will serve as trials to find the provincial Sanders Cup representative crew and the team to travel to the national contest next Easter. On Sunday yachtsmen in all divisions will be taking part in the third round of the annual Estuary pennants, and the Canterbury Yachting Association’s regatta will be held on Waitangi Day, February 6.
