Apollo Eleven progresses

i I (N.Z. Press Association) 1 AUCKLAND. Apollo Eleven made hfs first i ■public appearance for almost a year in an exhibition gallop, once round, at Ellerslie yesterday, and showed some of his old pace when galloping the last 600 metres in 37 2-ssec. Apollo Eleven was the star of the Sydney racing carnival last autumn, but injury prevented his being prepared for the Melbourne Cup. A further leg injury meant that he had to miss the Auckland Cup and Wellington Cup meetings as well. Apollo Eleven paraded bright and robust, and appeared to pull 'up well from his gallop. If he continues to do well, ! Apollo Eleven will have a race at the Waikato Racing Club's 'meeting next month, after which arrangements will be made for | a further Sydney campaign.

i Chess.—The grand master, R. Petrosian, of Russia, beat L. iPortisch, of Hungary, in the i fifth game of their quarter-final round for the world chess i championships. The games are (being played at Palma, in the i Balearic Islands.
