Ngauruhoe spews rock

(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Jan. 28. Mount Ngauruhoe was violently active again this morning, spewing forth hot rock avalanches, and Mount Ruapehu was showing signs of a build-up in activity. There was also a short earthquake in Turangi at 6.01 a.m.

After a “fairly quiet” week-end, Ngauruhoe entered its second week of activity wth a burst of eruptions, starting at 6.14 this morning. A report from the National Park rangers’ headquarters on Mount Ruapehu said the crater was continuing to send up ash-loaded material to heights of 500 feet above the crater lip.
