Mansfield evening

“The Daughters of The Late Colonel,” one of Katherine Mansfield’s most renowed short stories, will be brought to life for Christchurch audiences when Pat Evison (above) opens her show, “An Evening with Katherine Mansfield,” on February 4 at the Court Theatre. Three other short stories will complete the evening’s entertainment. The first is “The Voyage,” in which a young girl whose mother has just died travels in the

Picton ferry to her new home, accompanied by her grandmother. Autobiographical elements intrude into the second story, “The Wind Blows,” which portrays the traumatic experiences of an adolescent girl who has fallen in love with her music teacher. “Miss Brill,” a tale about an old lady living in Paris, who as part of her dally routine toddles down to the park to listen to the band, is more in the style of an interior monologue.

Pat has already recorded “The Daughters of the Late’ Colonel” for Kiwi records. The programme was originally presented at Downstage Theatre, and later opened Centrepoint, the new professional company at Palmerston North. Reviewers have praised the show in both centres. The show’ will run for a limited season at the Court Theatre. There will be a matinee on February 9.
