Strife reported on Grenada
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico), January 28. The more affluent residents of the Caribbean island of Grenada have been queuing for all available transportation oil the island, hoping to flee from looting and sporadic gun-battles between political opponents, according to reports reaching Bridgetown, Barbados, which is 150 miles north-east of Grenada.
Uncontrolled looting is said to have occurred throughout the 133-square-mile island at the end of last week, but the violence had apparently subsided by late on Saturday night. Grenada is due to become jcompletely independent from Britain this week, and the strife broke out between supporters of the Pr.me Mmister (Mr Gairy) and those who oppose independence if
he continues as the island’s leader. Two of Mr Gairy’s supporters are said to have died from injuries suffered in an attack by militants opposed to the Government. In all, three people are said to have died in the disorders.
