Bauxite cartel proposal
CV.Z. Press Assn —Copyright) SYDNEY, Jan. 28. Australia will attend a meeting in West Africa next month at which six of the world’s principal bauxiteproducing countries will discuss the formation of a cartel. Bauxite is the main ore used in the production of aluminium. Australia has reserves totalling 2000 million tonnes, or more than one-quarter of the Western world’s known deposits. The cartel proposal has already brought a nervous reaction from the United States and Europe, where the aluminium industries rely heavily on imports of ore or alumina. No firm attitude has yet been developed by the Australian Government towards the proposal, which would involve joining forces with countries such as Jamaica, Surinam. Jugoslavia, Guyana, and Guinea.
