Duke as umpire
Clad in leather chaps to protect his trousers and with his sleeves rolled up, the Duke of Edinburgh looked completely at ease as he assisted Mr S. Mackenzie to umpire the main match at the South Island Polo Association’s Commonwealth Games exhibition tournament at Ryans Road, Yaldhurst, yesterday afternoon.
No doubt the presence of Prince Philip contributed substantially to the largest crowd seen at the ground. It was estimated at 7000.
From the moment Prince Philip mounted his pony. Lou, the two combined in an amiable partnership which lasted for almost an hour.
A registered thoroughbred, Lou was bred in South Canterbury by Mr R. R. Jordan. About 18 years old, she seemed to answer ail the demands the Duke made.
After initial decisions —when neither was sure how strict the other would rule—Mr Mackenzie found she, ring the umpiring with Prince Philip very pleasant, and found him most knowledgeable.
“He was on the ball all right,’’ said the captain of the winning team, J. McKelvie (Re.ngitikei). “Like any good umpire, he took it seriously and ruled decisively,’’
