Snowdon detained
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright > DETROIT, Jan. 27. Lord Snowdon was detained as a suspicious person and spent two hours in a police station in Detroit! after taking photographs; of policemen arresting a street vendor. [The detention of Lord Snowdon—on an assignment for the “Sunday Times” —caused serious embari rassment to the police commissioner (Mr Philip Tannian) and the Mayor of the city (Mr Coleman Young), who had earlier refused him an interview. In the photograph, Lord Snowdon sights his camera during the funeral service for a slain Detroit police officer last Monday. Lord Snowdon was picked up while reporting on the city’s crime scene with a writer, Stephen Arris. “Lord Snowdon takes the view that he’s a working stiff who prefers to work ; freely and anonymously,” Arris said. [Two policemen took Lord Snowdon to police headquarters because they suspected him of aiding a vendor who was alleged to be illegally hawking rings in the city : centre. [The lieutenant in charge [ failed to recognise Lord Snowdon and it was not until two hours later that his identity was established.
