Increase in rabbits

TN.Z. Press Association’ DUNEDIN, Jan. 27. The Alexandra Pest Destruction Board is “battling” ' to contain an increase in rabbits in the area after a • favourable breeding season in jthe spring. The board’s supervisor, Mr W. H. McLean, said that about 20 rabbiters were working full time to halt a further increase in rabbit numbers. “I think we are managing to hold them but it’s a battle and we still have a long way to go,” he said. Mr McLean said that the wet weather last spring made breeding conditions for the rabbits much more favourable than usual, j Meanwhile, he said, the Ministry of Agriculture was ' continuing its research lin the area to try to ‘find out why local rabbits ’ survived pest destruction ‘programmes.
