SCARCITY OF COAL ‘Makeshift’ at gasworks
(from Our Own Reporter) I WESTPORT, Jan. 25. I The decision of the Christ-; church Gas Company to accept 300 tons of Buller coal to make up a shortage from; the usual providers, the Liverpool and Strongman mines at Gr mouth, evidently was made with some reluctance. ; The company’s manager; (Mr E. Gorman) said today) that the works had been) blending the two Greymouth) coals and it had been found that coal from Denniston! and Stockton was scarcely; suitable, I ecause of the high) sulphur content. “The Buller coal is evidently found to be suitable at some other works, but the process at Christchurch is too sensitive to withstand the physical properties found in the Denniston and Stockton products” said Mr Gorman. He was hoping against hope that the latest consignment from Buller would not cause trouble to his retorts but he had his doubts. Mr Gorman said that for 30 years he had tried without success to use coal from the two Duller mines at his works.
